As a kid whenever someone asked to introduce ourselves, along with our name and how old we are, we also told in which school we studied. Schools are one of the most important building blocks of the personality of a person. What they are told, how they are told, how much they participated in activities, or even how much they scored, are all relevant for a significant period of one’s life and they learn a great deal about the world in their school time. The education a person receives in school is reflected in them throughout their life. And rightly so! As young kids we spend almost half of our active time in school, playing, learning, making friends, and what not! If we count the importance of a school, the list will go on and we’ll never reach the end. What if one wants to open a school? There are many education enthusiasts who have understood that educating the young children of our country is like strengthening the backbone of it. It ensures that the future is bright and we have hope. Today India’s population stands 1.3 billion and of which 25 percent of people are still illiterate. Even in such an advanced and modern world, there are kids who are deprived of education because there is no right infrastructure and the system has not done enough to curb poverty which eventually leads to dropping out of students. There are other social norms that devoids young kids to attend school. Although the young force of our country has realized this and have taken steps to work for these kids. Starting a school is a tough job to do but we have a list of a few things you should keep in mind before you open a school:
Create a Plan
Decide why do you want to start school. Apart from a business perspective, investing in an educational institution demands moral insights. You should think about the scale of your school, which board will it be affiliated to, about the facilities, how are you going to generate funds, what courses will you introduce, till what standard, how will arrange teachers. There is a list of endless things that you will have to arrange. Ponder upon them and create a plan accordingly.
Do your research
A school is not an easy venture to open. You have to do a lot of research about how you manage funds, how to curate a school, and what will the requirements. There are many rules and regulations set by governments about the location, building, facilities. Research about the standard and maintenance of the school. Make sure you go through all the rule books and have a checkmark against it.
Decide on the size of school
Before you plan to start a school, consider the scale of it. This will depend a lot on the kind of facilities you want o provide and the availability of land. This also depends on the budget you have and the board of directors’ consent. Make sure you foresee the possibilities of expansion in the future and make the necessary adjustment in the present to avoid any complications later.
Take Permits and License
To start a school in India, you need to have legal permission sorted beforehand to avoid any hassles with government officials. Certificate of Registration for society, Essentiality of Certificate that is issued by the Directorate of Education, Certificate of Recognition, Certificate of Upgradation, Certificate of affiliation, Building fitness certificate, Health Certificate, Scheme of Management, No Loan certificate are a few certificates you have to procure before you start a school. Make sure you are ready with all the paperwork and to take multiple rounds of government offices.
There are many educational boards in India, almost all states have their own educational board. There is also a central board of education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE-ICSE/ISC), International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge Assessment International Education (Cambridge International). All of them have a different set of rules and to affiliate with them, you have to abide by their bylaws.
Formation of Management:
You must have a board or a society of interested individuals (trustees) to run a school. Get your board/society registered under the Societies Recognition Act,1860. It is a mandatory provision to prove the non-profit motive of your society.
Choose the Right Location
the location of your school matters a lot. You must locate your school in a locality where very few schools are present. Be vary of the competition around. Make sure the place should be big enough for expansion and should follow all the government guidelines.
School Master Plan and School Architecture
Hire good architects and engineers and create a school building plan. The school architecture includes the number of classrooms, labs, play area, administration office, library, sports facilities. Getting approval to start a school is only granted by the state government when you have a school building plan. Even to get affiliation from any board you must have a school building plan approved by the state government. There are also regulations about the minimum land area requirement for CBSE and ICSE board. So make sure you have read all the guidelines by the given boards.
Have a defined vision and mission for the school
When you first thought of opening a school, you must have had a vision on which you want to build it. For every school, there is a motto, a guiding principle, and a philosophy. Make the regulation and bylaws of your school based on these principles. Having a firm discipline and a curriculum that is orientated towards the benefit of students and the society they come from is very important. For the scholastic and cultural development of students, make sure the curriculum has a combination of both leading to the holistic development of the child.
The hiring of Teachers and Staff
It is the presence of teachers that make the school a learning place. Many of us remember our teachers from the school who make our school life more happening and this learning experience worthwhile. Hire teachers for every subject make sure they specialize in it. Their qualification and professionalism will make or break the reputation of your school. You must know that to start a school and running it successfully is dependent on the teachers you hire. Along with teachers, hire support staff, lab assistants, receptionist, and other help for the maintenance of the school
This is amongst the first things to do. Everything in your school is dependant on this. The facilities you are going to provide in your school, from the number of classrooms to how big the playground be. Everything will require a good investment. Get yourself sponsors who are willing to support a noble startup and have your back.
Create a brand name and logo
Although this sounds very common before you start a school, understand that a school name is like a brand name and is very important for its recognition and popularity. It is the name that gives a student their identity for how long they study there. Think of a name that embodies a strong emotion and be relevant to the educational sector. Make sure once you decide the name and logo of the brand, get a patent.
Opening a school is a noble job, make sure you set regulations that treat people of all strata equally and everyone gets a uniform opportunity to take admission in your school. The process of opening a school is long but when you get going, it is a job that will give you peace of mind as you are making the lives of hundreds of children better!
